ET: How long have you lived in Bandung?
Mr. Putra: I’ve lived in Bandung for 8 years.
ET: What do you like most in teaching English?
Mr. Putra: What I like most about teaching English is I see what my students can achieve both in the classroom and later on in their lives.
ET: What do you find as the most challenging thing in teaching English and how did you overcome it?
Mr. Putra: At first, it was quite challenging for me to teach about tenses to my students due to absence of tenses in our native language. However, I strove to overcome this challenge with giving real-life examples and short story that describe how to use tenses properly.
ET: As we know, speaking is the biggest issue for most of English learners in Indonesia. As an English teacher, what are practical measures that you apply to your class in order to boost your students’ speaking skill?
Mr. Putra: Most of my students feel uncertain how to pronounce some words in English. Hence, I always provide them with common vocabularies in real-life situations and elicit those vocabularies so that they’ll be able to pronounce those words correctly.
ET: Is there any activity that you give to your students to sharpen their critical thinking skills?
Mr. Putra: I give them interactive activities and one of those activities is “try one sentence” where students will be divided into groups and then I instruct each student to write one sentence describing a topic on a piece of paper. The student then passes the paper to the next student who adds their understanding of the next step in a single sentence. However, the student folds the paper down to cover their sentence, so each time they pass students can only see one sentence. The object of the task is for students to keep adding the next step of their understanding and to boost their critical thinking skills.
