It is said that passion inspires deeper knowledge. We agree! That’s why we want you to meet this passionate English teacher from Bandung named Ms. Rani, who has 8 years English teaching experience, and let’s find out what motivates her to teach English.

How long have you lived in Bandung? I was born in Bandung, then I moved to Jakarta for 4 years and now I am back in Bandung working with English Today.

What do you like most in teaching English? What I like most about teaching English is that I see what my students can achieve both in the classroom and later on in their lives especially in professional settings. Many of my students are fearful of giving presentations in English in front of their bosses, so when I see them succeed I get a strong sense of job satisfaction.

What do you find as the most challenging thing in teaching English and how did you overcome it? At first, it was quite challenging for me to teach my students about English tenses due to the absence of tenses in our native language. However, I strove to overcome this challenge by giving real-life examples and short stories that describe how to use tenses properly.

As we know, speaking is the biggest issue for most of English learners in Indonesia. As an English teacher, what are some practical measures that you apply to your class in order to boost your students’ speaking skill? We use English Today’s Reverse 80/20 teaching method which promotes 80% student talk time in each and every session. This method helps learners get better speaking results in less time.

Is there any activity that you give your students to sharpen their critical thinking skills? I give them interactive activities and one of these activities is debating different topics while pretending to be someone else who would certainly have a different opinion from them, so for example: You must pretend that you are a middle aged, divorced American factory worker and the topic might be something like “ What is more important money of love?” This helps the learners to think from someone else’s point of view, I usually use this exercise for pre-intermediate level and above students.
