English Teacher Medan

Ms. Mel is a professional and innovative English teacher in Medan. She’s been teaching English for over 10 years. Here’s our complete interview with Mr.Mel, English Today’s Director of Studies of English Today Medan:
ET: How long have you lived in Medan?
Ms.Mel: I have lived in Medan for 4 years now, I am originally from Medan but I started my teaching career with English First in Jakarta. After I had become the Director of Studies at English First I was recruited by the Director of Studies of English Today Mr. Jose Goncalves. Now I am in back in my hometown to develop the corporate English training market here in Medan.
ET: What do you like most about teaching English?
Ms. Mel: I love seeing my students confidence develop especially when it comes to business English skills. While teaching in Jakarta I taught many start ups such as Bukalapak, Tokepedia and Traveloka and I really see a bright future for my country as long as we continue to develop our technology and English skills.
ET: What do you find is the most challenging aspect of teaching English and how do you overcome it?
Mr.Mel: The major challenge is overcoming different level students in one class. Thankfully, English Today’s internal and external teacher training  program provided a lot of training about different classroom management techniques that can actually find benefits to having different levels in one class. The major principle of English Today’s teaching methodology is the Reverse 80/20 principle of English teaching and with the principle the teacher creates role-plays which give the students 80% talk time and they learn from each other.
ET: As we know, speaking is the biggest issue for most of English learners in Indonesia. As an English teacher, what are practical measures that you apply to your class in order to boost your students’ speaking skill?
Ms.Mel : I always give real-life conversation examples with relevant English vocabulary and create role-play activities related to the target language of those situations.
ET: Is there any activity that you give to your students to sharpen their critical thinking skills?
Ms.Mel: I provide them with dabate topics and encourage them to express their opinions and ideas while providing reasons for those opinions and ideas.
