ET               : How long have you lived in Palangkaraya?
Ms. Umi     : I’ve lived here for approximately 9 years.
ET               : What do you like most in teaching English?
Ms. Umi     : I can motivate my students to learn English and I am able to give positive energy to others continuously. Those things make my life teem of positivity and optimism also makes me love my job as an English teacher.
 ET               : What do you find as the most challenging thing in teaching English and how did you overcome it?
Ms. Umi     : At first, the challenging thing to me was to ensure my students to fully comprehend and apply English learning materials that I had explained to them. Therefore, I always make a review or flash back at the end of each learning session with asking questions to my students and conduct group discussions.
ET               : As we know, speaking is the biggest issue for most of English learners in Indonesia. As an English teacher, what are practical measures that you apply to your class in order to boost your students’ speaking skill?
Ms. Umi     : I apply the rule to speak in English during the lessons even for students with lowest English proficiency. I endeavor to make all of my students speak in English without “criticize” grammatical mistakes that they made. The most important thing to me is to get them to adapt themselves to talk, and to think in English.
 ET               : Is there any activity that you give to your students to sharpen their critical thinking skills?
Ms. Umi     : Yes, I provide my students with games such as words jumble, continuing stories and jigsaw. Their critical thinking ability is improved and one of the indicators is they are able to ask and answer questions that require explanation or questions with higher difficulty level in English.
