ET: How long have you been teaching English?
Ms. Myria: I have been teaching English for 14 years
ET: What do you like most in teaching English?
Ms. Myria: It’s great to teach students from various backgrounds and personalities and I like to encourage my students to keep pushing through the limits in learning English because by doing so, I’m also motivated to learn continuously about becoming a great English teacher for all of my students.
ET: What do you find as the most challenging thing in teaching English and how did you overcome it?
Ms. Myria: In the beginning of my career as an English teacher, it was hard for me to not teach English with book-based learning method then I noticed a lot of my students were sleepy and bored. Fortunately, I researched and read a lot of books about how to be a great English teacher and how to teach English interactively.
ET: As we know, speaking is the biggest issue for most of English learners in Indonesia. As an English teacher, what are practical measures that you apply to your class in order to boost your students’ speaking skill?
Ms. Myria: I always have speaking session with my students in the beginning of the lessons, the students discuss about how to solve some cases. This activity is effective because it encourages them to enrich their English vocabulary and enhance their confidence to speak in English.
ET: Is there any activity that you give to your students to sharpen their critical thinking skills?
Ms. Myria: I provide my students with case studies, group discussions and debates to improve their critical thinking skills.
